Moving into a New Home - What to Expect

There are minimum standards that you should expect to see when preparing to move into an empty Newham Homes property.

Works to bring the property to this standard should be carried out before you move in. However, occasionally (but with your knowledge) some works may be carried out after you occupy your new home. You will be informed of what these works are and the timescales to complete them when you sign your Tenancy Agreement.

There are certain things which you will have to arrange for yourself before moving in, such as signing up with a supplier for gas (if installed) and electricity. For Choice-Based Lettings customers, you will have to arrange and pay your own removal expenses, and connection of telephone, etc. If you have a gas cooker, the installation must be arranged by you, but you must use a Gas-Safe registered installer to carry out that work. You may also wish to organise the re-direction of your mail from your previous address.

If you are an existing council tenant, you must terminate the tenancy on your previous property, and hand in all sets of keys to your property. Finally, you must ensure that you have provided your details for Council Tax purposes.

All this will be explained in more detail when you sign up for your new home. You can find details of what standards you can expect in the home you're moving into on our Lettable Standard page.
