What is Sheltered Housing

Sheltered Housing is designed to enable older people live independently with support if required from on-site staff, in a secure and friendly community environment. Support is provided by either residential or non residential Sheltered Housing staff and any other support provisions you may have are coordinated with your support provider.

Our properties have the added protection of being connected directly Newham Network Telecare Services our emergency call centre. Therefore, in the event of an emergency Newham Network can give you immediate support by contacting the emergency services, a family member (or friend) or indeed they will visit and respond themselves. Our call centre operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Newham Homes manages seven sheltered housing schemes; five in Newham, one just over our border with the London Borough of Redbridge and another, Hamara Ghar in Green Street E13. This scheme we manage in partnership with a local community-based organisation called Eastwards Trust, who specialise in providing services to Asian elders.

Our schemes range in design from bungalows to flats in two storey and high rise blocks. The great majority of accommodation is self-contained and we are working with Newham Council to refurbish those few that are not. All schemes have communal facilities such as:

  • Residents' Lounges for social activities
  • Ease of access including lifts to all floors
  • Security systems such as Door Entry and CCTV
  • Laundry rooms
  • Attractive garden areas
  • Some have guest rooms
